Why Cooking With a Gas Smoker is Best

When I get asked "What is the best way to cook meat - grilling or with a smoker?", the fast answer is "With a gas smoker". However that is not always the complete answer. Usually the person asking has some other factors that are important like speed or ease. Let's explore these.

smoker barbecue grill

Let me state first off that cooking with a gas smoker is by far the most juicy, healthy and wonderful way to prepare any meat. Nothing in this world tastes as good as a brisket that's been in the gas smoker for a few hours. No other way of cooking gives you the luscious aroma that gas smoking does or creates the same level of anticipation. Aslo its its darned near fool-proof in terms of preparation (if you burned a meal in a gas smoker, then you REALLY goofed somehow).

SMOKER

When cooking with gas as a heat source you don't "taste the heat" .i.e. wood or charcoal elements used to generate the heat. With a gas smoker, you get all the rich smoky flavor by adding wood chips to the water pan. In fact, the type of wood used so important to the end result that often wood choice is part of the recipe. It is this ability to add natural flavor that smoking is all about.

Using gas for the heat source in your smoker and wood chips for flavor gives you have the best of both worlds - you get that great smoked flavor from the chips and the gas smoker lets you control the temperature very exactly and makes cooking easy.

Finally, with a gas smoker you don't have to become an expert at setting up and maintaining coals, you fire it up and go (though not as fast as with a gas grill). Gas lets you control the heat very exactly which is critical for most cooking. Easy gas control also lets you experiment a bit over time and determine just the right temperature and time elements for your favorite menu items. It is very hard to do the same with charcoal or wood heat sources as the heat can be uneven and thus become their own variable in your recipes.

With all that said, if you are in a hurry and don't have time for the smoker, then a gas grill is the next best thing. In fact, many times a month I use my trusty gas grill to whip up a fast meal for the family.

Things To Know About Building A Barrel Smoker

If you are a BBQ addict, then a barrel smoker is for you, and you might consider making your own BBQ smoker. It is much less expensive to build a barrel smoker than to purchase one and a lot more fun! Don't worry; you don't need to be a professional craftsman to build one.

smoker bbq

There are 3 major parts to a smoker of this kind;

SMOKER

• Metal bottom for coal
• Cooling rack
• Method for ventilation

If all of these essential parts are included, then the smoker will be safe, as well as a good source or tool for grilling. When using a BBQ smoker, you don't need to be restricted to only cooking barbecues, you can branch out to many different types of food including Cornish hams, corn on the cob, twice baked potatoes, meatloaf, as well as other tasty dishes.

The steps that should be followed when making a BBQ smoker are not difficult, but may be a little time consuming. First you must choose a barrel. You can find one at a department store or a barrel company. Whichever is more convenient is where you should go to get one. You should probably contact an MIG welder, unless you are a proficient at welding. This type of professional will be able to get a clean weld.

Next a frame must be built, which will serve as support to the smoker. Make sure that the food will set on the rack at about your waist level, so that you will not need to bend over and make your back sore. Cut the barrel into 3 pieces, so that it can be shortened; then weld it back together after you have taken out the appropriate piece.

After all of the above have been completed, it is time to get to the "nitty gritty". Cut a door in the firebox and a hole from the firebox to the cooling chamber. Then cut another hole from the cooling chamber to provide for adequate exhaust. After these steps have been implemented, attach all of the parts together. Don't forget to build an exhaust. Round off the corners and cover the door with paint or wax. Make sure that this coating is fireproof. Bolt the door and don't forget to buy a grill grate. This grate can be bought at any home improvement store, such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Now your BBQ smoker is ready for the test.

The 1st time that you use your newly made BBQ smoker be cautious. Carefully examine the exhaust and determine if it would pass all of the safety tests that you feel are necessary. You can now be proud that you have built a BBQ smoker that will cook tasty meals. The best thing to remember is that you may have spent quite a bit of time constructing the BBQ smoker, but you definitely have saved money.

Subliminal Perception - How it Works

What is subliminal perception? Does it really affect your mind and behavior? Subliminal CDs and programs are one of the most recent tools in the self-development field that offers the promise of helping people make dramatic life changes conveniently, inexpensively and with little effort. But, to what degree does subliminal programming work?

Subliminal Perception, A Natural Process...

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC

Perception is the natural, normal way you receive impressions from your environment. Subliminal refers to information that is perceived below the level of conscious awareness. Normally, you pay conscious attention to a very small percentage of information that you experience through our sense and your mind. Try this test: take a moment to focus your attention on the sounds around you and you will discover there are many background noises you normally completely ignore...consciously that is. These sounds probably include traffic noise, machinery, conversations, birds, insects, etc. Nevertheless you are aware of this constant bombardment of stimuli, even though it is perceived below your conscious awareness by your extremely receptive and sensitive subconscious mind.

Interest in subliminal communication first developed shortly after Freud presented his revolutionary idea that we all have a hidden, unconscious mind. One of Freud's contemporaries, Dr. O. Poetzle, developed and tested theories related to the effect of subliminal stimulation on dream content. In 1917, Poetzle was the first scientist to demonstrate the close relationship between subliminal stimuli and posthypnotic suggestion. His discovery, called the Poetzle Effect, indicates that subliminal perceptions evoke dreams and actions days or weeks after the original perception.

In the last 50 years, many hundreds of carefully controlled scientific studies have been conducted on subliminal perception. An abundance of scientific data resulting from decades of research indicates that subliminal perception does occur and information perceived subliminally does affect the unconscious or subconscious mind. And most importantly, subliminal programming has been shown to be an effective tool for influencing and changing behavior. Controversy over subliminal stimuli arises precisely because it does influence people's behavior without their conscious awareness.

Subliminal Messages Used in Stores to Reduce Shoplifting...

It was discovered that subliminal messages could be masked in music or other audio programs. An article in TIME magazine in 1979, titled, 'Secret Voices,' reported that nearly 50 department stores in the U.S. and Canada were using subliminal messages in the music systems to reduce shoplifting and employee theft. One East Coast chain was reported to have reduced theft by 37%, amounting to the phenomenal savings of 0,000 over a nine-month period.

A similar story in the WALL STREET JOURNAL in 1980 stated the installation of a subliminal message system in a New Orleans supermarket accounted for a drop in pilferage loss from almost ,000 per six months to 'the astounding figure of less than ,000' - an all time low! Cashier shortages dropped from 5 per week to less than per week. Subliminal messages found to be effective were statements like, "I take a great deal of pride in being honest. I will not steal. I am honest."

Scientific Evidence: Subliminal Messages Influence Behavior

Extensive Documentation of Subliminal Perception

In his scholarly work titled "Preconscious Processing," Dr. Norman Dixon, a psychologist at University College in London, England, summarizes 748 scholarly research studies on subliminal perception.

Included in Dixon's authoritative work is a research study by Zuckerman (1960), that revealed a subliminal stimulus can by-pass conscious intent, and that it makes it unlikely a person would resist instructions which are not consciously experienced. Zuckerman required his subjects to write stories around Thematic Apperception Test cards. Superimposed on the ambiguous pictures on the cards were either the subliminal message, "Write More" or "Don't Write." As long as the instructions were subliminal, these messages had the desired effect. However, as soon as they were able to be perceived consciously, the messages had no consistent effect.

Behavioral Improvements Result from Subliminal Messages...

Dr. Lloyd H. Silverman, a psychologist at New York University, has been at the forefront of subliminal testing for 20 years. His work, with over 40 groups of subjects, has shown significant improvements in behavior after exposure to selected subliminal messages. IN a 1980 study, Silverman incorporated a subliminal message into a treatment of half of a group of smokers trying to quit smoking using behavior modification therapy. One month after treatment ended, 66% of the group exposed to the activating subliminal stimulus were still non-smokers, compared with 13% of the control group. Silverman says the positive effect of subliminal messages has been observed in assertiveness training classes, adolescents receiving psychotherapy, college students in group therapy, alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous counseling, and in people undergoing behavior modification for insect phobias and overeating.

Subliminal Messages Improve Academic Performance...

An article in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Volume 29, 1982, reports on a study by Dr. Kenneth Parker, a psychologist at Queens College in New York. Dr. Parker's research project was designed to see if subliminal messages can improve academic performance. Sixty students received visual subliminal messages using a light-flashing device called a tachistoscope. Three times a week, before class, the students looked through the eyepiece of the tachistoscope and saw a fast flash of bright light, nothing more. In the four millisecond flash was embedded a single sentence. The class was divided into three groups, each receiving a different message. Two messages were designed to enhance academic performance; the third was a control.

Careful statistical analysis of the results of the subliminal stimulation revealed significant improvement in academic performance. Groups one and two, receiving activating subliminal messages achieved average grades in the range of a high B to low A. Group three, the control, received an average grade in the low B range. In addition, those who received subliminal messaged had higher retention of the learned material after one month than the control group had.

Medical Clinic Uses Subliminal Tapes to Reduce Fainting, Smoking, and Temper Flare Ups...

In 1951, Dr. Hal Becker, a behavioral scientist and former member of the Tulane University Medical Staff, began investigating subliminal processes. Dr. Becker has published dozens of research articles which support the effectiveness of subliminal stimulation. One of Dr. Becker's investigations, presented in a scientific paper to the Ninth Annual Conference of Computer Medicine in Atlanta in 1979, involved the use of subliminal stress reduction messages incorporated into the sound system at the McDonagh Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. A seven-month trial produced dramatic results. Fainting caused by needle pain dropped to nearly zero, smoking in the staff lounge was cut as much as 79%, and the temper flare-ups in the crowded patient waiting room were reduced by nearly 60%. When the subliminal messages were stopped, these problems returned to former levels.

Subliminal Tapes Influence Dramatic Weight Loss...

Becker's research has shown that the use of subliminal messages can influence weight-loss with astounding results. In Metairie, Louisiana, at Dr. Becker's weight loss clinic, patients were exposed to videotape and audio cassette subliminal messages as part of a behavior-modification diet plan. One woman lost 100 pounds in one year's time. In a follow-up study, Becker found that 50% of the patients maintained at lease half their weight loss for up to two years after leaving the subliminal program, while 23% maintained 75% to 100% of their loss. This is a significantly better record than that of diet programs not accompanied by subliminal messages.

Another subliminal stimulation weight-loss study involved two experiments conducted by Silverman, Martin, Ungaro and Mendelsohn (1978) with two groups of overweight women. In addition to traditional diet therapy, half of the subjects received subliminal affirmations and half received neutral subliminal message stimulation. In both experiments, the groups receiving the positive subliminal messages lost more weight than the control groups. The group receiving subliminal affirmations continued to lose weight even after the experiment concluded.

Positive Proof Mind Absorbs Subliminal Information...

In another of Dr. Becker's controlled tests of subliminal perception, experimental and control groups were asked to guess a three-digit number. The experimental group was exposed to the number subliminally embedded in a hissing sound known as 'pink noise.' In three separate experiments, an average of 77% of those exposed to the subliminal numbers guessed correctly, compared to only 10% of those in the control group (who weren't exposed to the numbers). This confirms that subliminal messages are perceived at a non-conscious level.

HOW YOU CAN USE SUBLIMINAL PERCEPTION FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Research indicates that subliminal perception takes place when the subconscious portion of the mind is exposed to messages below the level of conscious awareness. Subliminal audio and video recordings are proving to be a safe and effective, easy and convenient, inexpensive and enjoyable way people can bring about profound personal change in their lives.

Programming the Subconscious Mind to Create Your Reality...

Did you know that your mind creates your reality? It's true. The functioning of the mind can be readily understood when considered in terms of the widely accepted view that the mind has both conscious and subconscious portions. The conscious portion of your mind is rational, logical and analytical. It questions and modifies incoming information from your sense before the information is stored in your subconscious mind.

The subconscious mind is non-analytical and houses the motivating forces that direct your conscious actions, thoughts, and habits. It affects your attitudes, how you feel, and what you do. The beliefs and thoughts you hold in your subconscious mind build and shape every aspect of your life.

In other words, your subconscious is what actually creates your life. This is why it is important to discover how to access the subconscious to remove negative, self-limiting beliefs and replace them with positive, life-enhancing beliefs.

The Secret of Subliminal Recordings

The secret of why subliminal recordings are so effective is simple: the positive messages on the tape directly access the subconscious mind. Other widely used self-improvement techniques work only on a conscious level. Unlike those methods, subliminal recordings permit you to work directly with that portion of your mind which actually maintains ongoing control of your life. You must effect change at a subconscious level if you want to make lasting improvements in your life.

Another reason subliminal programs and CD's are so effective is that they permit positive messages to reach the subconscious without interference or modification from the conscious mind. This is important because often your conscious mind will question or reject certain statements that it knows are not presently true. For example, if you are using positive affirmations such as, "I am successful," yet you know that success is not presently a part of your life, your conscious mind can negate the positive effect of the statement by rejecting it. Because subliminal messages bypass the conscious mind, the conscious mind cannot question or reject them.

Within your subconscious mind is the raw material that will automatically from your life tomorrow. Subliminal tapes and CD's provide you with a powerful tool to imprint on your subconscious the positive images that you select as the basis for creating the kind of life you want. The information your subconscious mind accepts through subliminal perception becomes the new mental programming that changes your life and propels you toward your goals.

A Word of Caution: Not all Subliminal Tapes & CD's are Equal...

Subliminal stimulation has been scientifically validated as a means to bring about desired behavioral change. However, not all subliminal tapes and CD's are equal; their effectiveness depends on tow key factors: the content of the subliminal messages and the quality of production-including the engineering and electronic mixing of the sound recordings.

Certain production methods used by some companies claiming to contain 100,000 or more subliminal affirmations are of very questionable at best. In order to produce recordings with this number of affirmations per hour, the voice track must be speeded up until it becomes an unintelligible high-pitched squeal and or/ multi-layered many, many times until there is only a garbled confusion of sounds.

While 100,000 affirmations per hour may make attractive advertising copy, there is no documented evidence that the squeal of a high - speed sound track or the garbled confusion of many multi-layered tracks can be understood by the subconscious mind. In fact, the vast majority of scientific experiments that have been done on subliminal programs were done with surprisingly few affirmative statements. In fact, in the study referenced earlier by Dr. Parker, the students were only exposed to a very few subliminal statements at each session, and yet because the statements were carefully constructed, the results were dramatically positive.

There exists NO scientific proof that the subconscious makes meaningful responses to any input that is unintelligible. In fact, the overwhelming consensus from both professionals and the literature suggests that a subliminal verbal communication should be delivered slowly and methodically.

The importance of the content of the messages used on subliminal tapes and CD's can't be overemphasized. It is critical that the affirmations be positive since certain negative or aversive subliminal statements may not only decrease the effectiveness of the tape or CD, they may even be counterproductive. It is wise for anyone using subliminal programs to be aware of not only how the tapes and CD's are made, but what messages are on them. Having a script of the exact statements on a subliminal program is invaluable. It will serve not only to inform you of the nature and content of the subliminal messages that will be programming your subconscious mind, but it can also serve as resource for conscious reinforcement.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ON SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS

Question: How do you use subliminal programs?
Answer: Subliminal mental programming is a passive process, relying on the natural ability of the subconscious mind to absorb information below the normal range of your conscious awareness. No active involvement, concentration, or relaxation is necessary for subliminal programs to work successfully.

Subliminal programs can be used anytime your like, day or night. Simply play the program in the background as you go about your daily activities. The programs do not have to be played at high volume. As long as you can hear the music or environmental sounds, your subconscious mind will pick up the subliminal suggestions in the program. They can be played as a soft, soothing background all day or night, even while listening to other music or TV. You can also soften the effect even further by adjusting the tone controls on your player.

Subliminal programs can be listened to anytime day or night while you are doing virtually any activity-relaxing, reading, studying, eating, talking on the phone, at the office, while you are exercising.

QUESTION: DO YOU SUGGEST USING MORE THAN ONE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAM AT A TIME?
ANSWER: The effectiveness of our subliminal programs can be compounded by using a compatible assortment of titles. However, in order to avoid overloading yourself, we recommend not working on more than 2 or 3 behavioral changes at a time. Programs not having to do with addictions or major life changes can be used together very effectively and will often work together to positively reinforce one another.

QUESTION: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I LISTEN TO THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS?
ANSWER: You can't really overdo listening to positive programs. The more often you listen, the faster you will begin to see results. It is recommended that you play your subliminal programs at least once a day and more often if possible. If you want to strengthen the effect of the programs and get results more quickly, listen to them several times each day and night.

QUESTION: HOW SOON CAN I EXPECT RESULTS FROM USING THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAMS?
ANSWER: For many people there are immediate, observable, and in some cases, dramatic results after listening to our subliminal programs only a few times. However, because each person is unique, results will vary from person to person. Remember, it has taken years to create the life you have today. The results of listening to subliminal messages are cumulative, so the desired changes will occur provided sufficient repetitions and time are allowed for all levels of your consciousness to absorb the new positive programming. Almost everybody will be able to see positive improvement in 60 days or less.

QUESTION: ONCE I HAVE ACHIEVED RESULTS, DO I NEED TO CONTINUE LISTENING TO THE SUBLIMINAL PROGRAM?
ANSWER: If you are using a subliminal program to help you reach a specific goal, such as losing twenty pounds or quitting smoking, once you have achieved the goal, you may have no need to continue using the tape. However, many people find it helpful to continue playing the subliminal programs from time to time for positive reinforcement. If you feel a desire to return to an old habit such as smoking or eating foods that cause you to gain weight, we suggest you use the subliminal programs again regularly until the desire passes. You may wish to use some of our subliminal programs on an ongoing basis whenever you feel the need. This applies particularly to such titles as Stress Reduction, Start the Day Great, Stop Procrastination, and our many spiritual titles. The main principle is to use the programs as long as or as often as you feel you want or need their benefits.
Subliminal programs provide you with an effective and pleasant way to bring about lasting personal change. We combine the most advanced electronic technology with the latest scientific knowledge of how the mind works and how behaviors are determined to provide you with state-of-the-art subliminal programming. Many thousands have found that using our subliminal programs helped them improve their lives and achieve positive results that seem almost miraculous!

Smoker Or Non Smoker?

It is some time ago now that you, as a smoker, have had that choice. Within the last decade there has been a sharp shift in attitudes to smoking and not smoking, and particularly in the last few years where a lot of smoking laws have been adopted, it has not been especially funny to be a smoker. There can no longer be any doubt that smoking and passive smoking is harmful, and as a smoker, you have some things to think about. But some smokers are not happy with the way they are looked down upon and automatically receive the label "2nd class person".

smoker

In this context, it seems somewhat comical - and surprising - to see how smoking has been accepted back in time, and how quickly attitudes have really changed against this within the last year. Many may remember to have seen the black and white and later coloured Westerns and war movies from the 40-50s, which both heroes and villains puffs on plenty of home-rolled cigarettes and cigar stubs.

SMOKER

In the happy sixties there were also plenty of tobacco, especially weed. The movie horror film "Alien" from 1979. In all that time the crew are on mission or fighting the alien, the whole crew are chain-smoking aboard the spaceship.

It is also a little funny that the main pressure against smoking has come from the United States, since it is precisely from the US that tobacco plant strains, and from which so much direct and hidden advertising of smoking (in the form of the aforementioned film) has come.
Today you should almost be "lucky" as a smoker, if you see an advertisement or a movie with tobacco in. If you on your work have access to a smokers room - congratulations! - "Enjoy it" as long as it lasts. The tendency is not to be underestimated, and for only a few years ago would today's US, "seen through the smoke" have made most smokers shake their head and think "impossible".

Many think now, rather that a total ban on smoking anywhere is not inconceivable that in the next decade. And it is not just a trend that is of national in scope - indeed international as well. In many other countries there are directly on cigarette packages shown pictures of people with bad teeth, and people who have opened up in connection with a cancer operation so you can see the whole glory - even in colour!

It does not have to end that bad for you as a smoker - there are lots of ways and means which can equip and help you to a day filled with fresh air. All kinds of smoking cessation resources in the form of nicotine products, hypnosis therapy, acupuncture, quit smoking pills or NLP is perhaps just what it takes to help you to quit smoking.

Use your common sense and select the treatment resources / forms that appeals to you.

Electric Grills - The Healthier Way to Grill

There are several types of grills on the market today, specifically, gas, charcoal, and electric. If you are considering an electric grill, here is what you need to know.

Electric Grills perform well in apartments or condominiums where "no open flame" regulations are in place. These grills will not produce smoke or ash, which makes it extremely easy to clean. Worried about flavor? No problem. With simple wood chips you can give your food excellent flavor. You can find wood chips at any local retailer. In addition, an electronic grill will heat the entire cooking surface evenly. This allows you to enjoy evenly cooked food no matter where it happens to be laying. Changing propane cylinders or buying bags of charcoal are a thing of the past. All an electric grill needs is an electrical outlet.

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC

The electric grill market is expanding quickly, and there are typically more advanced features to be found with these tech savvy grills. Digital control panels, built-in thermometers and hotdog rollers are just a few of the available features. Many electronic grills also come with space saving designs making them perfect for balconies or small patios.

If you are looking for a healthy and environmentally friendly way to cook your food, an electronic grill is definitely the best choice you can make. Simply put: They get hotter, cook more evenly and don't produce waste or byproducts. If cost is an issue, you can operate an electronic grill for far less than what you would pay for charcoal or propane.

Types of wood pellets

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC

There are different types of wood pellets that add great flavors to the food.

Apple Strong Sweet, fruity smoke. Strongest of the fruit woods Beef, pork, ham, poultry, game

Cherry Mild Sweet fruity smoke that gives a rosy tint to light meats Beef, pork, poultry, fish, game birds

Hickory Strong Bacon-flavor, most commonly used and recognized smoke Beef, pork, poultry, fish, game

Mesquite Strong Spicy, very distinctive smoke of Southwest cooking Beef, pork, poultry, fish, game

Oak Mild Heavy smoke with no after-taste, gives foods a wonderful smoked color Beef, pork, poultry, fish, game

Pecan Mild Similar to hickory but milder and sweeter with a nut after-taste Beef, pork, poultry, fish, game

The Operation

A. The unit automatically starts when you turn it on. It activates the igniter rod and the auger will load the wood pellets into the firebox at the same time the draft induction fan begins supplying air into it. For the first four minutes the igniter's light will be red hot that is sufficient for setting the pellets on fire.

B. There are 2 types of temperature controller. The first is the manual control that has 3 settings: smoke, medium and high; and the second is the digital thermostat control that allows you to set a particular temperature and automatically adds wood pellets to retain the temperature. Also, when starting and stopping the auger motor the electronic microprocessor controls the smoke and heat.

C. When the device is on, the auger and draft induction fan works constantly. There are some holes inside the firebox where air enters. Also, there is a heat shield located at the upper part of the firebox where the initial heat diffusion occurs. The heat is distributed from the center to the side of the firebox while the steel drip tray serves as secondary area for heat diffusion wherein heat is distributed from front to rear of the cooking chamber. This proper heat sharing and division cooks the food evenly.

For more products you can check it on the Traeger's official website. When you already know what you want and how to use, it's time for you to start cooking and have fun!

Always be generous when applying the rubs and spices to get the best flavor out of your meat. Start off with general smoker recipes and then you can customize them to suit your taste by adding favorite spices here and there. Experiment a little with different things to see what you like best.

When smoking meat, sauces are the other main ingredient. Tomato based or vinegar based sauces are the two main varieties of bbq sauce with smoker recipes. Depending on the geographic region you are from, the sauce varies. My personal favorites are the tomato based sauces. If short on time, you can just buy a bottle from the store.

Smoking meat is an art form when at its best. Many good books are written about the subject. Ones that are written by people who compete in competitions are best as they know the tried and true smoker recipes from experience. When you learn from the best, you are on your way to great bbq.

Air Purification - Clean Air For All

This piece of equipment ought to make every human being proud. An air sanitizer is an electronic device that cleans or purifies the air by removing dirt particles from it. Sometimes it is also known as an air purifier. Take note: an air purifier does not necessarily deodorize the air in a room. Some do, others don't. It depends on the unit model and its features.

Purified air is similar to that clean fresh air that comes after a rain. The air is clean because of the dust and other pollutants being forced down to the ground that leaves behind the fresh, clean air. That's why when you breathe in the air after a rain it just seems fresher. This type of effect can also be done within your household.

Buying Guide

Here are some basic facts about air purifiers:

* An air purifier in the house is a good thing for asthmatics and those suffering from airborne allergies. It also helps reduce the degree of second hand cigarette or tobacco smoke. If you've got a smoker in the house, especially when there's children around, it's time to think about getting an air purifier.

* When purchasing an air sanitizer, you have several factors to consider, including visual appeal, electrical consumption, frequency of filter replacement, noise level and gaseous by-products.

* Choose a model that is as environmentally friendly as it is household friendly.

* Noise level is another consideration. If you can't sleep with the sound of someone snoring, wait until you hear the noise from this one. Some air purifier models are as big as a small fridge, so imagine just how effective they can be ay keeping you up at night.

The air purifier-or air sanitizer, as some people call it-is right up there as one of the greatest products of modern technology. A person can live without food or water for several days, but no one can survive more than a day without fresh air. The human body simply needs fresh oxygen to function, and that's where the air purifier comes in. With an air purifier, you can rest assured that you're taking in only clean and fresh air.

Whole House Air Cleaners Report - Why They Do Not Work!

As you search for that perfect air cleaner to protect your family from dust, pet dander and other airborne allergens, you will run across many different types of air cleaners, air purifiers, air filters and air filtration systems. One of the most interesting and eye catching products on the market is the Whole House HEPA Air Cleaner Filtration System. This report also includes Whole House Air Filters and Whole House Air Purifiers. There are many of them on the market! Unfortunately human nature often kicks into high gear when the wonderful offer of a central whole house air cleaner is advertised as a way of keeping your entire house clean with just one single gizmo! THE FACT IS THESE AIR AIR CLEANING MACHINES JUST CAN'T CLEAN A WHOLE HOUSE!   There are five types of air cleaning products that are advertised to clean a whole house. They are: HEPA air filtration bypass air cleaners  Electronic air cleaners Self-Charging electrostatic air filters Ultraviolet light systems Portable ozone-ionizer air purifiers This report will explain the truth about how each of these products actually operate and what benefits they really do provide for you. Also included are the proper steps to take for a clean indoor air environment.

Myth #1. Whole house HEPA air cleaner / bypass systems - These somewhat expensive systems are flawed in design from the beginning. The idea behind these units is to pull a portion of the air stream from the return side of your furnace or air conditioning system, clean it and then return it into the supply side of the furnace or air conditioning systems ductwork. Most of the time, it involves taking up to 30% of the air from the return ductwork. The air is then cleaned with a high efficiency filter such as a HEPA and/or carbon filter. The cleaned air is then returned into the supply ductwork of the air handling system (bypassing" the air handler unit). Such an air cleaning system under this design poses many areas of failure. First of all, you are assuming that the majority of the airborne contaminants in your living space are drawn into the heating and or cooling system.

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE

However, home heating/air conditioning systems are designed to heat and cool. They are not designed to pull dust, dander and allergens into a HEPA air cleaner from the narrow return ductwork at far distances. Note that the great majority of homes have only one air return per air conditioning system. So without having a means of returning the air from each and every room to the air handler, the overall effectiveness of these HEPA air cleaner systems is nullified. This is because the majority of rooms will not be able to have dirty air pulled from them. So the "whole house" air cleaner will only be able to clean the dirty air that makes it into the return side of the ductwork. This is a very limited amount! Secondly, in order for the HEPA air cleaner to work at all, the fan for the HEPA cleaner and the fan for the air handler unit must run all of the time.

THIS MEANS HIGH ELECTRIC BILLS! Having both blower units running constantly uses significantly more electricity than portable systems located in individual rooms. Lastly, and more importantly, even in an ideal world where the air from all over the house is making it back into the return duct work through multiple air returns, a bypass system is only cleaning up to 30% of the return air because it is only receiving up to 30% of the return air. This means, even if the HEPA air cleaner unit is running at 100% efficiency for all contaminants, only 30% of the entire air going through the return duct work is actually being cleaned. Therefore, when you look at the system as a whole, it is only 30% efficient. Plus the entire air return duct work from the air vents in the rooms to the HEPA air cleaner system will become filthy because the air entering into the return duct work is not being filtered! Also these whole house cleaning systems require expensive pre-filter replacements to protect the even more expensive HEPA filter! The bottom line here is that Central HEPA filtered types that install into air conditioning / furnace systems cannot properly clean the air in an entire house or building!

Myth #2. Whole house electronic cleaner systems (Also Called Electrostatic precipitators) - Electronic systems are made to fit into the air return side of the central air conditioning system or furnace. They can only filter the air that is brought into them from the air return duct or area that leads to the electronic  cleaner unit. These units use electrically charged metal or fiber cells that attract dust particles onto them. Unfortunately this old technology is outdated and it does not work well! This is because after a light amount of dust covers the surface of the charged cell grid, the rest of the incoming dust and allergens will pass right through the air cleaner and back into the indoor environment for people to breathe! Also, Central Electronic Cleaners with Charged Collector Cell Grids Produce Non-Adjustable Levels of Ozone! This can be an irritant to people with asthma and lung problems! Since most homes and buildings have only one central air return per system or zone, these electronic cleaners cannot pull dirty air from rooms or areas that are more then a few feet away from the air return that is attached to or leading to the electronic air cleaner. Major companies that produce these electronic cleaners are Honeywell, Trion and Aprilaire. THERE IS NO WAY that central electronic cleaners can pull the dirty air from across the house or from the inside of bedrooms and or offices that are away from the central air return area in your home or building! They Are Not Whole House Air Cleaners!

Myth #3. Whole house self-charging electrostatic air filters. These air filters are custom made to size to replace your existing throw away air filters in your furnace or central air conditioning systems air handler unit or air return. They are made from multiple layers of poly propylene fiber which allow them to become electrically charged when air flows through them. They can then grab dust and allergens onto them like a magnet. These air filters are durable, washable, reasonably priced and they can last for many years. They are wonderful for keeping your air conditioning or heating system and ductwork clean as they can catch and remove very small particles of dust and allergens from the air in your home or building! However, just like the less effective throw away filters, self charging electrostatic air filters can only clean the air from the air handler unit or from the air return area they are operating from! Self-charging electrostatic air filters cannot pull the dirty air from across the house or from the inside of bedrooms and or offices that are away from the central air return area in your home or building! They Are Not Whole House Air Filters!

Myth #4. Whole house ultra-violet (UV) light systems for central air conditioning units - These ultra-violet light systems are installed into air conditioning systems to kill mold and bacteria. They do not remove dust, particulates or airborne allergens from the A/C system, air ducts or from the indoor environment! These units are supposed to be installed so the ultra-violet lights are shining onto the evaporator coil on the air return intake side to prevent mold and bacteria growth on the evaporator coil and surrounding area, yet many of these units are installed improperly into areas of the air handler or air plenum where they can not do much good. Beware of UV light systems that produce ozone! Many of these UV light systems produce ozone at levels that cannot be controlled! Too much ozone can be an irritant to people with asthma and lung problems! I have experienced ozone producing UV light systems that created so much ozone it burned my eyes and throat.

And I do not have asthma or any lung problems at all! Some of these units are also produced with non-ozone producing UV bulbs. However please note, if an air conditioning system is clean and installed properly and it has a high quality self charging electrostatic or pleated air filter in it to protect the air handler and evaporator coil from dust, the chance of the evaporator coil and the rest of the system becoming contaminated with dirt, mold and bacteria will be greatly reduced. We recommend properly cleaning your air conditioning system and duct work while installing an upgraded quality air filter instead of an ultra-violet light system. Please know that ultra-violet Light units for your air conditioning system are not whole house air cleaners even though people will claim that they will keep your entire home clean!

Myth# 5. Whole house Portable ozone ionizer air purifiers - Some air purifiers include both needle point and radio wave ionizers that can ionize the air in mutable rooms in your home or building. These units produce negative ions that are sent into the air. Negative ions work by attaching themselves to small floating particles in your indoor air forcing the particles to quickly drop out of suspension and then down to the ground or onto any surface below. These purifiers will drop smoke, dust, pollen and animal dander from the floating indoor air environment and down to the surface below to be vacuumed. However if your bedroom is in the area being ionized, floating particles including allergens can drop onto you while sleeping in bed. This can cause problems for those with allergies and asthma. Some of these machines also produce adjustable levels of ozone.

Ozone is that fresh smell that occurs after a thunderstorm when lightning cuts through the oxygen splitting some of the oxygen in the air into ozone. Ozone does a wonderful job of removing all kinds of odors such as smoke odors, musty odors, pet odors, food odors, chemical odors, and body odors. The ozone works by oxidizing the odors. However, since ozone is an oxidizer it can be an irritant to those with asthma and lung disease if turned up to high. So if you or a family member has asthma or lung problems, ozone -ionizer air purifiers are not for you! IF YOU'RE A SMOKER THEY REALLY DO A GREAT JOB OF QUICKLY REMOVING FLOATING CIGARETTE SMOKE, CIGAR SMOKE AND ODORS FROM INDOOR ENVIRONMENTS.

Please remember that these air purifiers do not filter the air and they are not whole house air cleaners even though people often claim that they are! THE ANSWER, What You Can Do For a Clean Indoor Environment As explained above, there is no one single air cleaning system that will keep your entire home or building dust or allergen free. If you have a central air conditioning or furnace system in your home or building and you have the desire to keep it as dust and allergen free as possible, follow the four steps below for a clean and healthy indoor environment.
Keep you ducted air conditioning system or furnace clean and install a quality self charging electrostatic air filter or pleated air filter in the main air return or air handler unit to keep your system clean for the future. If you desire to have your air ducts and air handler unit properly cleaned visit the National Air Duct Cleaners Association at NADCA Dot Com  and interview some of the members in your area so you can choose the right air duct cleaning company that will best fit your needs. Purchase and place a quality HEPA air cleaner or HEPA air purifier in the most important areas of your home or building that need to be the most dust or allergy free. Most people place HEPA air cleaners or HEPA air purifiers in the bedrooms, family room and office area if there is one. If you have a mold problem in your living space or if you need a unit that will kill and reduce mold bacteria and viruses, make sure you purchase a portable air cleaning unit that includes a non ozone producing ultra-violet light system. When choosing a portable HEPA air cleaner or HEPA air purifier it is important to look for brands and models that are quiet while producing the highest air exchange rate per hour in any given sized room or area, at the lowest aftermarket filter replacement cost. We feel that the highest quality HEPA  units on the market are made by Austin Air, TRACS and EZ Air.  If possible replace all carpeting with ceramic tile or hardwood floors. Tile is best New carpeting is loaded with toxic chemicals that will outgas for a period of 2-3 years and old carpeting is often loaded with dust and allergens that include molds, bacteria, dead skin, animal dander and dust mite allergen. All of these problems are major triggers for allergies and asthma! If the carpeting must stay, VACUUM OFTEN! Use a quality HEPA vacuum cleaner that is sealed tight so the fine dust does not blow back into your indoor environment while you are vacuuming. Sweeping ceramic tile or hardwood floors is not the best way to clean as it causes the dust and allergens to fly back into the air. Vacuuming all surfaces with a quality HEPA vacuum cleaner is the best way to go. We feel that the Airstorm HEPA vacuum cleaner is the highest quality HEPA vacuum cleaner on the market. Un-clutter your living space and keep it Clean. This is very important! Also get rid of all feather pillows and wash all of your bedding in HOT water as least once a week to limit dust and Dust Mite allergen from building up. Dust Mite allergen is very reactive to people with allergies and asthma. It must be reduced as much as possible! If you have pets, do not allow them into your bedrooms to spread their animal dander. Look at your bedrooms as a safe haven to sleep in if you are allergic to your pet dog or cat. If you do have pets and follow these four steps, you will have a much better chance of being able to keep the pets that you love and live with. It is our hope that this report will be helpful to you in creating a healthy, clean, more allergy free indoor environment for your family or workplace employees!

Electronic Cigarette - Smoke Without Fire

Asked recently to write about electronic cigarettes, I have to confess that I had never heard of such a thing. Some internet research later and I discovered that electronic cigarettes are very much a quickly growing concern. A Google search revealed there is no smoke without fire as almost six million results just for the phrase "electronic cigarette" were returned.

What is an electronic cigarette?

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE

The electronic cigarette has been in existence for almost three years and is a clever device aimed at providing smokers with a healthier option. Apparently also useful in helping to reduce and indeed quit smoking altogether.

Now in a fourth generation, electronic cigarettes have become much more user friendly than earlier versions which perhaps were a little too large to encourage a mass market appeal. The "mini" is the most realistic e cigarette to date with its length of 100mm being the same as a conventional cigarette.

An electronic cigarette contains a taste of tobacco but none of the harmful substances found in normal cigarettes allowing smokers cravings to be satisfied without inhaling the many dangerous toxins. Is it all smoke and mirrors? Or can this item really be the saviour it wants to be?

A battery, an atomiser and a renewable nicotine chamber allows the smoker to hold and smoke the electronic cigarette just as they would any other cigarette, even creating a "smoke" like vapour and glow at the end as they draw. The nicotine chamber proves very useful as cartridges are available in different strengths, permitting the user to reduce the amount of nicotine they intake until if they wish, can quit completely.

A nicotine cartridge typically lasts the same time as 15 to 20 cigarettes, thus creating a huge saving to normal costs. Standard, medium, low and no nicotine at all are the various cartridge strengths.

A healthier option altogether it seems, though the benefits don't end there. Due to the electronic cigarette not emitting any dangerous substances, toxins or real smoke for that matter, they are perfectly legal to smoke in public. In winter in particular, normal cigarette smokers have to brave the freezing cold and the rain just for a quick smoking break but this alternative will allow them to stay in their offices, restaurants and pubs.

None smokers also will benefit, as their worries about passive smoking are rendered null and void by the electronic cigarette. A much more sociable environment then!

Upon reflection the electronic cigarette is a healthier, cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative to smoking and as the awareness and the market grows they have great potential to successfully replace the harmful cigarettes we have all come to know and many of us have come to dread and fear.

Smoking Ban Ignites Arguments

You might smoke them or hate them - love them or berate them - but regardless of your position, the government has decided to ban smoke from more and more bars, restaurants and cafes across the US. The smoking ban seems to strike a nerve in everyone. The news is either met with extreme glee or extreme irritation - all depending on whether you smoke, don't smoke, own a bar, feel a ban infringes on your rights or wish the government instituted the ban years ago.

Quite a few controversies surround the smoking bans and smoking in general - and everyone seems to have their own opinion on whether the move towards no smoking was right or wrong:

SMOKER FRIENDLY ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE

Non-smokers: almost all non-smokers are happy for the ban, and encourage the government apply it to more places, including cars and homes - so that the children of smokers will not have to suffer in a smoky environment. Smokers: the majority of smokers feel as though the public is prejudiced against them. There are even a few who argue that the negative side-effects of smoking are not solidly proven by science. There are less and less people to support this stance as more and more information is published about the risks of smoking. Business Owners: business owners who had to suddenly enforce the ban in their businesses, restaurants, clubs and bars have mixed feelings about the new laws. Some claim that there has been no change in the number of patrons - while others have been completely devastated. Politically Minded: a surprising number of smokers and non-smokers who oppose the ban simply because they see it as an infringement on their rights. They argue that once the door is open to government regulating the behaviors of the public, who knows what other rights will be taken away.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

In my opinion, all sides of the smoking ban argument raise legitimate points. Undoubtedly there are benefits to the smoking ban - the obvious being the improvement of public health. On the other side of the card, there are some negative points negatives like the number of business owners who can no longer pay their bills because their patrons have fled to the few, smoke-friendly clubs.

As I've researched this article, I have also found some completely unforeseen, border-line weird side-effects of the ban. For example, the statistics on how the ban has impacted drunk driving fatalities, spawned a generation of "healthy" cigarettes and linked barbecues to some of the same chemicals as smoke.

This article will give you a breakdown of my take on smoking bans including "the good, the bad and the ugly".

The Good

Here are some good things that have been produced by the bans:

Drop in Heart Attack Occurrence. This is an absolutely amazing fact! Heart attacks have long been associated with cigarette smoke, since the chemicals in smoke cause narrowing of the veins and arteries in the body, putting strain on the heart. Clotting is also a cause of heart attack that is often directly related to smoking. Research done at the University of California found that after only 1 year of having the smoking ban in effect, heart attack rates were 17% lower than usual! Some of the individual towns studied by the University of California had more dramatic results - Helena, Montana had its heart attack rates cut in half only after 6 months of the smoking ban! Healthier Work Place. Some estimate that working in a smoky environment for a long period of time can cut your life expectancy by 10 years! This is because the same risks that come with smoking also apply for second hand smoke. A smoke-filled workplace can be a non-stop source of secondhand smoke - working an 8 hour shift in a smoking environment is similar to chain smoking for all of those hours. So now your favorite bartender or waiter can look forward to living a longer life with a decreased risk of developing cancer, COPD, stroke or heart attacks. (But then again, if they choose to work in a smoky environment in the first place then avoiding smoke may not be at the top of their list. You would have to agree that no one made them work there - there are many other smoke-free callings and careers out there!) Healthier Restaurants and Bars. No more coming home from a night out with clothing that reeks of smoke! Now your favorite restaurants and nightspots are a healthy place to spend a few hours. Many businesses claim that their number of patrons have increased since the smoking ban - indicating that all of the non-smokers who used to stay home now have a good reason to go out and live it up. Smoke-free restaurants are much better for their youngest customers - since children are at more risk from cigarette smoke because of their small, developing lungs. VFW and Elks Clubs Boost in Members. The few private clubs that do allow smoking are now in high demand. Some organizations like VFW posts and Elk clubs that used to have sparse numbers now are booming with new members (as long as they are exempt from the ban. For many of the clubs that have banned smoking, funds are so tight that they have been forced to give up their charitable donations or have closed completely because of it). More "Quitters". In some locations, the ban has sparked renewed efforts to quit smoking for good. New York City reports that adult smoking is down 19% - which translates into 240,000 less smokers in NYC's population. (Unfortunately, the flip side of these statistics is that other areas have actually reported an increase in smoking among working class men since the ban.) Removing the smoke from public places should technically help the fight to quit. This is partially because of the way that nicotine re-wires your brain. The more nicotine that enters your body, the more nicotine receptors develop in your brain to absorb the chemicals. A smokers brain would have billions more of the receptors than a non-smoker. Being in a place where you can smell smoke, or see someone else smoking in enough to switch on the receptors that cause nicotine cravings. The smoking ban cuts the number of times a "quitter" will be reminded of smoke cravings by the nicotine receptors during a night out, making it easier to quit.
The Bad

Here are some negative effects of the smoking ban:
Bars and Restaurants Driven Out of Business. It seems like there are many areas in the country where the smoking ban has taken such a toll on their businesses that owners are closing their doors for good. Certain states, like Delaware (40% decrease in profits) have had a substantial loss in profits since the smoking ban took effect. Combined with the economic downturn of recent months, the results are ruinous. For business owners, closing a business down is a nightmare scenario - and for employees it means that their jobs hang in the balance. Clubs like VFW Posts and Elk Clubs that were listed in the "Good" category above can just as easily fall into the "Bad" category all depending on whether the smoking bans applied to them. These organizations were once known for their charitable donations to the community - but now their money making events like Bingo no longer attract a crowd. Now they struggle to keep their doors open. Job Loss. It goes without saying that businesses who have been hit hard by the smoking ban will be the source of lost jobs. These small bars and night clubs might have been flourishing up until they were told that smoking was off limits to their patrons. For many owners, their business was their livelihood - and losing their business spells financial disaster for them. Employees have reason to worry as well. In general, bartenders, waiters and waitresses make very little money per hour, because the greater part of their income comes from tips. The loss of smoking patrons means that they get fewer tips, and as a result, their bills become harder and harder to pay each month. Erosion of Personal / Property Rights. Many people (smoker and non smoker alike) view the government imposed bans on smoking in public places as a dangerous stance. Was it right for the government to ban the use of a legal product on private property? (i.e. any property that is owned by a private citizen. Private Citizens are people who aren't holding a public office . . . so that means most of us). They see this as infringing on the rights of the public - and that the future may bring more of these controlling mandates on personal or public matters. What's next? A ban on greasy, fast food meals or a nationwide ice cream ban? Obesity is the fastest growing cause of avoidable deaths and diseases in the U.S., so this would only be the next logical step towards better public health. How would you feel if the government began regulating the meals a restaurant was allowed to serve you - or what food you were allowed to eat in your own home? "The Quitters". Yes, I know - I just listed the "Quitters" as a "Good" outcome of the smoking ban, but it can just as easily be categorized as "Bad". This is because the average smoker burns up to 200 calories more per day because of their habit. Also, since nicotine is an appetite suppressant, they are in general less hungry throughout the day. When someone quits smoking, the most common means of coping with the withdrawal is eating. Once taste buds get back their ability to taste after quitting smoking, food will taste better and be even more irresistible. The average quitter gains anywhere from 10-20 pounds - but roughly 10% of all quitters will experience 30 pounds or more in weight gain. This means that out of those 240,000 people who quit smoking in NYC because of the ban, 24,000 of them are will join the ranks of people who are in danger of obesity. Here's the ironic part: many of the same diseases linked to smoking are linked to obesity (heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, cancers, asthma, depression, etc).
The Ugly

Here are some very strange facts about the smoking ban:
More Drunk Driving Deaths. No one wants to die in a hospital bed as a result of inhaling second hand smoke. How about being run down on the road by an inebriated smoker? Oddly enough, the smoking ban actually increases your chances of dying in a car accident. A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee compared the number of drunk driving fatalities in areas where smoking was banned versus areas where smoking was still allowed. The results were surprising and suggest that smokers are willing to drive farther and farther just to find a bar where they can light up and enjoy a couple of drinks. Before the bans took effect, a smoker could walk to the local tavern. Now, he must take to the road and drive to a neighboring county or state that allows him to smoke in public. The reasons for the added danger is two fold: getting behind the wheel in the first place and then the added travel time. This means that there are more drunk drivers swerving down the road in smoking ban territory than in smoke-friendly areas. It just seems like if the smoke doesn't kill you one way, it's going to kill you another way. Cigarette Companies Developing "Healthy" Cigarettes. Huh? Healthy Cigarettes? The cigarette company British American Tobacco is hard at work developing new, less toxic cigarettes. It sounds crazy, but the truth is that they have been able to reduce the toxins in their new cigarettes by up to 90% as compared to conventional cigarettes. To test their product, they recruited a room full of smokers to puff on the new cigarettes. Then they tested biomarkers in the test subjects' saliva and urine and compared those levels to regular cigarettes smokers and non-smokers. So, will cigarettes get a healthy, new, image makeover in the future? British American Tobacco would like to think so. Every-Day Sources of the Same Toxins. If you escape the cigarette smoke, then what about the other sources of the same pollutants found in cigarettes. You might be exposed to more of these chemicals than you realize! The frying pan full of bacon, or the barbequed shrimp, or the gas station - these are a few sources of pollutants that are the same as those found in cigarettes. Cooking bacon fills the house with volatile nitrosamines that are the same as those found in cigarette smoke. Eating barbequed food exposes you to polyaromatic hydrocarbons that are also found in smoke. Standing at the gas station to fill up your car - or filling up the lawn mower with gasoline - can easily fill your lungs with a heavy dose of benzene that is present in both gasoline fumes and cigarette smoke. These are just a few examples of other toxic situations that you encounter everyday. Has the smoking ban really made life safer? I guess so - as long as you don't drive a car or other gas-powered vehicle to your favorite bacon and barbeque-free night spot.
Was placing a Government Ban on Smoking the Only Way?

Whether you are a smoker or not, it sure seems like there were other options out there besides the all out ban.
If the government wants a nation of non-smokers, maybe the solution would be taxing cigarettes more heavily - or making them illegal altogether. No - they couldn't do that because big tobacco pours huge amounts of money into political contributions and has a very powerful lobby. Plus, if cigarettes were made illegal, the loss of tax income to the government would be staggering. Maybe the solution is segregating smokers and non-smoker by creating pro-smoke and anti-smoking bars? It sounds extreme, but it would certainly give customers and employees more options. We don't need laws for this option - just progressive thinking bar owners. Another plausible solution would be to have smoking hours after the dinner rush - when most people stop at the bar for a drink and a smoke. Pros: prevent children from the heaviest of smoke levels. Cons: unless the business does something to clean the air between the night time smoking hours and the daytime crowds, one could argue that a lot of the smoke is still in the air. What about improving the air inside the bars? This seems like the easiest solution. The challenge is that the most prominent technology in the smoke removal industry were electrostatic smoke eaters. See, companies that made these machines played on the bar and business owners wishes of not wanting to spend money on filters. So, they created electronic smoke eaters that didn't require filters. But was the problem really solved? Hardly... The electronic smoke eaters required time consuming and messy cleanups. If the electronic smoke eaters weren't maintained properly, the effectiveness drops off considerably. This basically means that they would stop working. Based on the poor maintenance and even worse performance - the bar and restaurant industry got the incorrect impression that smoke eaters don't work. As a result, they stopped trying to solve the problem altogether. If more businesses had tried the filter based smoke eaters, they would have had a workable solution. Perhaps if this were the case, bar owners would have solved their own problems and the government could have stayed out of it. Of course no smoke removal system is perfect, but a HEPA filter based smoke eater that also has a carbon filter for gases, fumes and odors and a pre-filter for the heavy particulate can do a really good job. The key is having enough power to filter the air - an entire room needs to cycle through the smoke eater's filters 10-12 times an hour and then you can really make a dramatic difference in the air quality.
So what do YOU think about the smoking bans?

Are you a smoker? A non-smoker? A business owner?

Type 2 Diabetes - Smoking Plus The Effect Of Secondhand Tobacco Smoke On Non-Smokers!

According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, smoking tobacco increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes by raising blood sugar levels, resulting in increased insulin levels. That can lead to insulin resistance which increases the chance of developing both Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Anyone who smokes more than 20 cigarettes a day nearly doubles their risk of developing Type 2, in comparison with non-smokers.

Non-smokers who spend time with smokers often get the same diseases that are common in smokers. A group of researchers in the Department of Epidemiologyy and Health Index, Center for Genome Science, Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Osong, Korea, and the Department of Preventive Medicine, Gachon University of Medicine and Science, Incheon, Korea set out to discover whether secondhand tobacco smoke in the environment could put non-smokers at a high risk for Type 2 diabetes. The results of their study will be published in the journal Annals of Epidemiology in January 2011.

Ten thousand and thirty-eight people from 40 to 69 years of age were included in the study. Among four thousand four hundred and forty-two volunteers who had never smoked and had not been diagnosed with diabetes at the beginning of the study:

485 acquired Type 2 diabetes within the next six years those exposed to secondhand smoke at home had more than a 40 per cent higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than had those who were not exposed the volunteers exposed to secondhand cigarette smoke for over 4 hours per day at home and in the workplace, had almost twice the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who were not exposed

From these results researchers concluded secondhand smoke in the environment was a significant risk factor for acquiring Type 2 diabetes.

When given the option, it's always wise to choose the non-smoking section of a restaurant or other public place. If secondhand smoke is a problem in the workplace, attention to ventilation or a discrete request to have it made a non-smoking environment might be helpful.

If family members smoke, sometimes they can be persuaded to smoke outside, use electronic cigarettes, or, better yet, to stop smoking altogether.

The Mayo Clinic has several suggestions for quitting:

not trying to have "just one" cigarette is recommended because satisfying a craving does not stop at just one identifying and avoiding triggers chewing gum can help reminding yourself of good reasons to quit requesting help from friends or family members using nicotine products designed to curb cravings any sort of physical activity can help

Unfortunately the stats show that once smokers quit, it's likely they will resume smoking. But don't let this throw you if you are a smoker. Try to stay away from other smokers and don't be embarrassed if you feel you need to say "no" to the offer of a cigarette.

As a diabetic, you have unique things to consider after you quit. Actually your diabetes control will improve, your blood sugar levels will lower and you may want to change your insulin dose or diabetes pill schedule.
